The three main problems related to water treatment in water cooling systems can be divided into:

- Deposition or incrustation;
- Microbial Growth.
These three types of problems always happen together, interconnected, varying in intensity according to the characteristics of the water, environmental conditions and industrial systems.
There is the need to control these problems in order to achieve the maximization of income, life cycles of the heat exchanger and cooling system as a whole.
The Losses caused by lack of water treatment in cooling systems are significant and manifest themselves quickly as a form of:
- Stops for cleaning the heat exchanger;
- Downtime for maintenance and replacement of the heat exchanger at the system;
- Reduce production due to downtimes;
- Reduce production due to poor heat transfer in dirty equipment;
- High maintenance costs; etc.
